Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

Dear Ramsey Families:

I am please to announce that the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has selected W. H. Ramsey Elementary School to participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for the 2009-10 School Year!  This is indeed an honor given that only 81 schools throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were selected for participation.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides all children in participating schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day. It is an effective and creative way of introducing young children to fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options. Several goals of the program include expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience, increasing children’s fruit and vegetable consumption, and creating a healthier school environment.

This year, Chartwells Dining Service will provide your child with a healthy fresh fruit or vegetable snack during the school day at Ramsey Elementary School. This will occur on three days per week. The fresh fruits and vegetables will be distributed to classrooms so that the children can enjoy them during a classroom snack time. We will introduce the children to many different fresh fruits and vegetables and look forward to providing these to them. Please be advised that this service is in addition to the students’ normal lunch arrangements. Additionally, if your child’s classroom teacher regularly provides a snack time during school hours, you may feel free to send a snack of your choice each day in addition to the fresh fruits or vegetables.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the Ramsey Elementary School Office or Nancy Franks, Chartwells Dining Service Director, at (570) 421-4840.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Susan Werkheiser
Principal
W.H. Ramsey Elementary School
